The
Billings Method is a natural method of birth
control. Looking at the structure of the cervical mucus the girl determines
whether she is close to ovulation.
During this period she abstains from intercourse.
The
amount and structure of the mucus changes during the menstrual
cycle.
Just after a girl’s period there’s not much
mucus. The vagina is dry. Mucus keeps the sperm
cells from entering, as you can see on the right drawing. Several days
before ovulation the mucus
changes.
The vagina
feels moist and the mucus looks cloudy, like eggwhite.
When this happens you know you have to abstain from intercourse.
Once you know what you are looking for you keep a daily
chart of the colour and texture of the mucus. To use this method well you need
detailed instructions.
