PID is short for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, an umbrella term for infections of the female reproductive organs.
In 85% of the cases it’s caused by having sexual intercourse without using a condom. The two major causes are Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.
The incidence is highest in women aged 15-25 and decreases with age.
The infection starts in the vagina and moves up into the uterus, the ovaries and fallopian tubes. It can lead to adhesions of the fibrous tissue and cause (parts of) organs to stick together.
If both fallopian tubes are affected it may unable you to have children.
