What will they do when you go for STD assessment?
In the Netherlands you first have a talk with a nurse or doctor who will ask you about the risks you have taken, if you had a STD before and if there are any symptoms. You can ask questions and discuss the pros and cons of a STD assessment. You also have to look at former partners who may need to be notified when something is wrong. After this talk you decide whether you want to have a physical exam or not.
The physical exam can include taking some urine and the tapping of blood (syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV). The physician might do a pelvic exam, using a cotton swab to collect a small amount of fluid from the girl’s cervix and the guy’s penis. It’s uncomfortable, but not really painful. The doctor can also get a swab from your throat or anus.
In theNetherlands they phone you after one or two weeks. Sometimes you have to drop by to get the results. Treatment depends on the STD you got.
