The
abortion pill (also called RU 486) is an alternative to abortion
through suction curettage. It is not one pill, but several tablets which you can
take to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
It’s only effective during the earliest weeks of pregnancy.
In the Netherlands you cannot buy these tablets at the pharmacy
and take them in the privacy of your own home. It’s part of the abortion legislation,
so you can only get it at an authorized clinic or hospital.
Before
the introduction of this pill abortion was only done through suction
curettage. Considering the swiftness and carefulness of this procedure,
the abortion pill doesn’t seem to have many advantages.
Don’t
confuse the abortion pill with the morning-after
pill, which you take if you had unsafe
sex and still want to prevent pregnancy.
How
does it work?
