When
someone is infected with HIV
the person is at risk for all kind of infections and diseases that do
not normally occur with someone who is healthy. A few examples:
·
A third of the people with AIDS
die of pneumonia. This is a disease that fills the lungs with fluid and makes
breathing extremely difficult. Normally this disease can be treated fairly easily,
but that’s not the case if someone has AIDS.
·
Many die of a form of skin cancer (Kaposi’s sarcoma).
It starts as small spots, growing larger as time goes by. This cancer is difficult
to treat and is most often found in men.
·
In Africa the majority of AIDS related deaths
is caused by chronic diarrhoea, causing malnutrition and severe weight loss.
