Androgyny
is the combination of andro (male) and gyne (female) in a single individual. You call someone androgynous
when the person has ‘male’ and ‘female’ characteristics, both in equal proportions.
When
someone is androgynous in appearance it can be hard to see whether you
have to do with a girl or a guy. The biological sex is not readily apparent.
You have to look really well to find out.
Someone can also be androgynous in conduct. This means
that there is a mix of ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ behaviours. Behaviours are not
restricted to traditional sex roles.
Androgynous people often reject the notion of ‘feminine’
and ‘masculine’. They know that there are two sexes (you are either born as a
girl or as a boy) but don’t think this has any bearing on feelings or behaviour.
Being born as a girl does not imply your feelings are any different from those
of guys or that you have to behave a certain way. They want to eliminate gender
as a category, not thinking about themselves and others in terms of male or female
anymore.
