Candida
is the name of an innocent but annoying and widespread infection. It’s also called
thrush. The
yeast-like fungus (candida albicans) which causes the problem lives on most people’s
skin. In healthy people it’s kept under control. But when the immune system runs
down or defences are low this fungus can grow unchecked, resulting in an infection.
It’s mainly women who suffer from this infection. Possible
causes are bacteria of the anus
that enter the vagina,
a one-sided diet (like junk food and much sugar), antibiotic use, hot baths, (too
much) intercourse,
stress, diabetes, soaps and scented hygiene products, hormonal changes (pregnancy),
tight-fitting trousers and nylon pants.
It’s widespread. About 75% of the women will experience
it at least once, while 45% will experience two or more episodes per year.
