I’m seventeen and want to be circumcised, but I don’t want my parents to know. Do I need permission from my parents?

In the Netherlands if people are 16 years or older medical treatment is up to them. So if you are 17 years old you don’t need permission from your parents. But the insurance company may cause a problem if you don't want them to know you are circumcised. If your parents have private insurance and you are co-insured, your parents will get the bill and will know you had an operation. If they have national health insurance you have to ask the hospital whether they settle the bill directly with the insurance company or not. You should bear in mind that with an operation you run the risk of something going wrong. If you live at home and your parents don’t know about it, it's bad news if you have complications. You’ll be faced with two problems at once. It seems easier to inform your parents about your decision. Why would you keep it secret?
