Fear
of commitment is the fear of loosing one’s freedom and autonomy when starting
a long-term relationship. This fear makes real intimacy difficult or even impossible.
People
who fear commitment might start a relationship, but as soon as you come too close
they will feel smothered and want to get out.
If
the relationship ends the one left behind often has no idea why it went wrong.
Fear of intimacy might be difficult to recognize.
If
you want intimacy, but are in a relationship with someone who doesn’t want to
commit – not even after being together for a long time, you have a problem. Unless
your lover acknowledges the problem and wants to solve it, you should ask yourself
the basic question: how long are you willing to wait? You might be better of with
someone who has no fear of intimacy.
How
do you recognize people who have a fear of commitment?
