It’s estimated that in the world 130 million girls and women are 'circumcised'. Every day 6000 girls are mutilated this way.
The practise originated in Africa and is still a mainly African practise. In 28 African countries this operation is still forced on girls, on a large scale. For instance in Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Guinea, Mali and Sierra Leone more than 75% of the women miss their clitoris, inner and outer lips (being sown together after being cut off).
It happens on a smaller scale in the Middle East, South East Asia and Latin America.
The past twenty years it is also practised in for instance Europe, Canada and the United States by a small number of immigrants.
