In
the past any sexual dysfunction in women was called ‘frigidity’, in the same way
that ‘impotence’
was used for men.
·
It’s an old-fashioned and judgemental
term, since the blame for a woman’s sexual unresponsiveness was placed on her.
Doctors for instance called a woman frigid if she didn’t orgasm
through penile thrusting, assuming something was wrong with her. Now we know that
most women need clitoral stimulation in order to come.
·
People who are educated
and know something about sexuality will not use the word frigidity because of
its negative connotation and inaccurate assumptions. Nowadays the term is mostly
used as an insult.
·
If a woman has sexual problems
sexologists and doctors often speak about “female sexual dysfunction”. This can
refer to no
desire to have sex, an inability to become exited
or not knowing (yet) how to orgasm. But in many cases it is probably more
accurate to speak of female sexual dissatisfaction.
