Most people have a tendency to postpone telling bad news, to tone it down or to tell it in stages. But this is not a good approach. Don’t beat about the bush and tell it straightforward. Make sure you choose a moment that you both have enough time and won’t be disturbed. A good setting is outside, during a walk in the woods. Say for instance: “I have very bad news which bothers me greatly: I’ve cheated on you.” Bear in mind that he may become angry, sad or clams up completely. Let him know how much you regret what you did. Don’t come up with excuses and don’t defend yourself. Just let him know you made a big mistake. Give him space to express his emotions. Reckon with him needing time to come to grips with it and don’t expect it to be okay the same day. It can take months before things are somewhat back to normal again. It’s also possible that he is unable to accept it and wants to break up the relationship. So be mentally prepared for a negative reaction.
