Genital
herpes is a STD caused
by a virus.
The first sigh of genital herpes is pain or itching of the skin
around the genital area or the anus.
This begins 2-20 days after exposure to the virus. Tender
red bumps on the skin change into water blisters or open sores (ulcers). These
normally appear on the genitals or around the anus. But these can also be present
where you cannot see them: on the cervix
(girls) or in the urethra (guys). Sometimes there is discharge from the penis,
vagina or anus.
These
blister rupture, becoming ulcers that ooze or bleed. After a few days these heal.
The skin returns to normal. During
the first outbreak you may experiende flu-like symptoms,
like a headache, fever and swollen lymph nodes in the groin. Drugs
can help to reduce the symptoms, but there is no cure. It can return anytime.
