Hormone
Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to relieve the nasty symptoms of menopause.
Because it’s not always clear what causes the complaints doctors do not always
prescribe the same medication. A few possibilities:
Only estrogens,
prescribed when the doctor has the idea the estrogen level is too low. Vaginal
dryness and hot flashes can be solved this way. But without progestagins (the synthetic modifications of the progesterone
molecule) there may be side effects. A
combination of estrogen and progestagins. The progestagins meet the objections of estrogen only therapy.
This combination may also help if the woman complaints of a lack
of sexual desire. Only
progestagins, from the idea that complaints during menopause
are caused by estrogen dominance (in comparison to the progesterone level)
Some
advocate the use of natural hormones (having exactly the same structure as the
hormones your body produces). They are claimed to have fewer side effects than
synthetic hormones. If you choose HRT to get rid of
your complaints get well informed beforehand about the side effects and risks.
