Every
girl has two ovaries, containing and releasing egg
cells and secreting hormones.
They are located on either side of the upper end of the uterus.
They
are the size of unshelled almonds and can be found in the pelvis, between the
upper edge of your pubic hair and your belly button, a little bit towards your
hips.
At birth about 400.000 immature eggs are present in the
ovaries. During the girl’s teens, after the menarche,
the ovaries start releasing egg cells. Each menstrual
cycle a ripe ovum ruptures, which is called ovulation.
Some girls know when ovulation taking place, feeling it like a sharp ache. This
is called ‘mittelschmertz.’
When the ovary releases an egg cell it is received by the fallopian
tubes, where fertilization
can take place.
