Paraphimosis
is an emergency in which the foreskin
gets stuck behind the glans.
This only occurs to men who are uncircumcised.
·
Guys with a tight foreskin
are at risk, when they retract the foreskin but cannot return it to its normal
position. The foreskin forms a tight, constricting band of tissue. This impairs
the blood flow, which results in a painful swelling of the glans and the foreskin.
·
It may happen if
you pull the foreskin back during sex or cleaning, but also if you fall asleep
with your foreskin retracted or after a physical exam in which the nurse or doctor
forgets to return the foreskin to its original position.
·
If it ever happens to you, seek
help immediately. Don’t wait till urination becomes difficult. Prompt attention
and treatment is absolutely necessary. If you don't seek help penile gangrene
and auto amputation (the penis falling off) may follow in days or weeks.
·
The GP will administer a local
anaesthesia and massage the foreskin, reducing the swelling. If this is not enough
to return the foreskin to its normal position, the doctor will make a small cut
(dorsal slit) in the foreskin. If you want a formal circumcision this can be performed
in an operating room at a later date.
