A
pelvic exam is an examination of a girl’s outer and inner genitals. You might
need a pelvic exam for various reasons, such as to check out a vaginal
infection, to get certain kinds of birth
control – like an IUD
or a diaphragm,
or to screen for STD’s.
What to expect?
Normally the doctor will ask some questions, about your health
and medical history, your periods,
vaginal discharge, birth control etc. After
talking, you’ll be asked to undress and to lie down on a special table. You have
to open your legs, while there may be stirrups for your feet. One
part of the pelvic exam is when the doctor inserts two gloved, lubricated
fingers into your vagina.
With the other hand the clinician gently presses against your lower belly, to
check the uterus,
fallopian tubes
and ovaries. The
other part is when the doctor has a look inside your vagina with a speculum
to inspect the vaginal walls and cervix.
It can be a bit uncomfortable, but normally doesn’t hurt. What
can you do to make it as comfortable as possible?
