Pubic
lice are little insects that attach themselves to pubic hair. Their nickname is
crabs, because they have front legs that look like the pincher claws of a crab.
They
are transmitted by sexual contact and therefore considered a STD.
But it can also be contracted through physical contact with bed linens or a shared
towel, although this is exceptional since they need the human body to survive.
They
can occur on all places covered by hair, except for the head. But they are generally
found in the genital area. The
most obvious symptom is itching, which is normally worse at night.
The
lice are oval and usually yellow to white. Because they are very small they may
be hard to spot. Sometimes you can see the nits (lice eggs) that are attached
to the hair shaft close to the skin. What
to do about it?
