Syphilis
is a STD caused
by a bacterium. It’s called ‘the great imitator’ because the symptoms
are similar to those of other diseases. The consequences can be serious
if syphilis is left untreated.
The
first sign of syphilis is a sore on the genitals, mouth or anus. It is
passed on through sex, through direct contact with the sore(s). You cannot
get infected by the toilet seat, the swimming pool or door knobs.
A
good wash or denying the problem won’t work. If you think you might be
infected get
it checked out! This can be done 6 to 12 weeks after you had unsafe sex,
so not immediately after you made love.
It
can be completely cured if the diagnosis is made early and the infection
is treated appropriately. But of course it’s better to prevent it by using
a condom
every time you have sex.
