Testosterone
is hormone which plays an important role in stimulating and maintaining
male secondary sex characteristics. It belongs to a family of hormones
called androgens.
It
is produced mainly by the testicles
and for a small part in the adrenal gland. It influences the secondary
male characteristics (body hair, deepening of the voice, sperm production
and the growth of bone and muscle) and plays a crucial role in the formation
of the male genitals.
Testosterone
is the most important hormone when it comes to sex, both for guys and
girls. It enhances sexual
desire and contributes to sexual functioning. A lack of testosterone
can cause erection
problems, while girls with a lack of testosterone may have a diminished
or no desire for sex.
The
amount of testosterone in the female body is much lower than with guys,
but the effect is comparable because their body is more sensitive to
this hormone.
During
your teens your body produces more testosterone, increasing the sebum
production. This may cause acne.
Girls can solve this problem by using Diane 35, a contraceptive
pill with anti-androgens.
