If you lose your virginity only if a penis enters the vagina (the traditional definition of virginity) it implies that lesbians remain virgin, even if they had sex. This shows how old fashioned the term ‘virgin’ actually is. It stems from a time when only heterosexuality was considered normal, women were considered to be the property of men and sex equalled intercourse. I think it is more informative to speak about people who are sexually experienced or inexperienced, since intercourse is only one of the possible sexual acts people can engage in. The fact that we only have a quick word for someone who has fucked for the first time reveals what our culture considers most important and worth talking about. Hopefully this will change.
