Vulvar
vestibulitis is syndrome of unexplained pain or burning on
touching the skin between the inner lips,
around the vaginal
entry. It is estimated that 2-3% of the women suffer from this condition.
It can be a chronic problem lasting months to years.
The
area around the vaginal entry is often red. There can be small red spots,
tears or wounds. It may include the whole area around the vagina, but
it is most commonly seen in the lower part (between vaginal opening
and anus).
Touching
the skin around the vagina is painful, causing pain with all kinds of
activities, like masturbating,
fingering,
having intercourse,
washing the vulva,
inserting a tampon
and bicycling.
It’s
not yet known what causes vulvar vestibulitis
and it is often misdiagnosed. Before the 1980s very little was known
and there still a lot of research needed in this area.
There
is not one approved method of treatment. In the past surgery has been
tried to solve the problem, but without the wished for results. There
are several treatment options and every woman has to find out what works
for her. If you think pain may be due to vulvar
vestibulitis seek help. Bear in mind it might
take time to find relief: take an active stand in finding a solution.
If
you are in a steady relationship you might also need sexual counselling,
in order to not let it ruin your sex life.
